THE MAIN POINT

A benchmark is evidence about a component, not a customer outcome.

Research and product observation

The useful technical idea

A realistic face, correct lip motion and a successful customer task are different things. Technical evaluation should identify which component fails, while product evaluation checks the completed workflow. A good image-similarity score does not establish accurate translation, safe rights handling, understandable training or repeat value.

DisCoHead: company-linked research

Source: Hwang et al., DisCoHead, arXiv:2303.07697 v1 (2023). Full methods, experiment table, discussion and figure captions read; architecture figure visually inspected. This is historical research with DeepBrain-linked authorship, not evidence of the current production stack. Paper, project.

The method separates control of head pose, mouth motion and eye-region expression. A geometric transformation extracts motion; a motion-aware encoder applies it; an expression decoder uses audio and eye features. Experiments reconstruct 256×256 faces on Obama, GRID and KoEBA with an 80/20 split and 400-ms centered audio context. Table 1 compares reconstruction, perceptual, keypoint and identity metrics across variants and baselines. The authors report favorable comparisons; the table also has differing best variants across individual metrics. The discussion identifies extreme poses as difficult.

Limits: benchmark faces and reconstruction scores are not a multilingual production evaluation. Centered audio context does not imply zero-lookahead live interaction. No demonstrated improvement in customer acceptance, workload or learning follows. Dataset splitting details do not establish a customer/source-isolated commercial test. The figure is a research architecture, not a diagram of AI Studios.

Product decision: evaluate synchronization, identity stability, pronunciation and meaning separately, then test whether reviewers can approve and use the output. Ask which failure slice currently limits customer value. Do not propose retraining before identifying whether the cause lies in source extraction, translation, timing, rendering or handoff.

Technical definitions you can say aloud

  • Lip synchronization: mouth movement aligns with speech. A translated sentence can sync well and still be wrong.
  • Text-to-speech (TTS): generates spoken audio from text. It is separate from translation and face generation.
  • Dubbing: replaces spoken audio in a video; may include speaker matching, timing and lip synchronization.
  • Asynchronous job: the request is accepted before work finishes. Retain the job ID and check its final state.
  • Idempotency: repeating the same intended write produces one effect. It needs a server contract; a UI spinner is not enough.
  • Webhook: a service notifies another system when state changes. Deliveries can be repeated or delayed; verify actual contract and deduplicate.
  • Entitlement: what the account is allowed to use. A credit is an allowance unit, not a dollar of compute cost.
  • Heldout evaluation: cases reserved from development decisions. Repeated frames or renders from one source are not independent customers.
  • Judge calibration: compare automated ratings with expert labels, especially missed important failures.
  • SCORM/xAPI: learning-system interoperability and activity-data standards. Compatibility or completed quiz events do not establish learning improvement.
  • GRR/NRR: retained recurring value before/after expansion from the same opening customer set, excluding new sales.
  • SBI: describe the specific situation, your behavior and the supported impact after answering the question directly.

Read-only observation log

On 23 October, the homepage, pricing page and Saramin listing were inspected in the in-app browser. The product homepage displays several creation choices and an unlimited-video message near free entry. Pricing provides separate resource limits. Visiting the app redirected to a sign-in page with Google, Microsoft, SAML and email choices. No sign-in, new account, upload, generation, payment or external publication was performed.

Several marketing-page embedded players reported “Unable to play media.” The DisCoHead page exposed demo sections/captions; players showed buffering during inspection. The architecture image was visible. No complete demo playback or audio/transcript review is claimed. Figure/caption inspection supports understanding of the intended control pattern, not measured visual quality over a clip.

Blocked tests: document import fidelity; scene editing; dubbed pronunciation; export/use; duplicate generation; job failure/recovery; refund/debit behavior; review permissions; account deletion. Record all as untested. A suitable future authorized test would use a short fictional source with a number and proper noun, inspect one locale version, change the source, then check review invalidation and recovery within a declared cost limit.

Research questions that could change the plan

  1. Which journey has the largest gap between customer intent and useful completion?
  2. What do current users mean by quality, and who reviews it?
  3. How much cost is repeated inference versus human repair/support?
  4. Which plans, regions and APIs share a canonical entitlement contract?
  5. What evidence connects completed video work with renewal or improved communication?
  6. Who currently leads the product area, and what decisions are delegated to this PO?

Current leadership ownership and internal team structure were not verified from an authoritative current biography. Saramin lists representative 장세영; that alone does not identify PJ's interviewer or reporting manager. No private revenue, runway, architecture or customer count is inferred.

Prioritized reading

First 20 minutes: job profile → three SBI cards → pricing meters. Next 30 minutes: localization workflow → canonical metrics DB01/05/06/07/13 → one synthetic chart. Then: PRD FR1–FR6 and research implications. Read model equations only when preparing for an explicitly technical follow-up.
